Culture and Economic Development – Part III

Posted on December 4, 2024 by Dharmic Network

The article below is summary of third part of a three part article written by M. S. Srinivasan on Culture and Economic development published by Fourth Dimension Inc.

M.S. Srinivasan is a Research scholar at Sri Aurobindo Society, pursuing studies and research in various fields of knowledge as a part of the spiritual discipline for inner development. The main theme of his studies and research is to evolve an integral-spiritual approach to human development and its application to various fields of knowledge and activities of life with a dominant interest and focus on Management.

The article highlights the relevance of ancient Indian insights for the future evolution of humanity, emphasizing a shift from material to spiritual, moral, and psychological progress. Sri Aurobindo’s vision of humanity’s next evolutionary leap aligns with modern ecological and developmental concerns, as affluent societies approach the physical and biological limits of material growth (Artha). Ancient Indian seers, however, foresaw such limits not just ecologically but also in terms of unchecked indulgence in vital desires (Kama), which depletes human creative energy and stunts higher evolution.

Modern focus on material energy preservation overlooks the importance of conserving and managing human creative energies, which are equally crucial for sustainable progress. The article calls for building an ecologically and psychologically sustainable society, balancing spiritual, psychological, and material resources to ensure humanity’s smooth and secure advancement toward its evolutionary potential.

Ancient Indian development ideals, centered on a harmonious integration of Artha, Kama, Dharma, and Moksha, offer a valuable framework for guiding this transition. These insights advocate for a balanced, conscious approach to preserving both external and internal energies for a sustainable and spiritually enriched future.
